Baccarat Residences on a protected archaeological landmark

In a landmark decision, Miami’s Historic Preservation Board designated part of the ancient indigenous village site on the Miami River as a protected archaeological landmark. 

The site, located at 444 Brickell Avenue, where the discovery of native culture dating back thousands of years. However, the designation may not impact the development plans of the Related Group, who has already begun construction.

Despite the ceremonial groundbreaking scheduled for Baccarat Residences, the site’s archaeological significance remains a matter of concern. The designation document for 444 Brickell acknowledges the developer’s vested legal interests, allowing construction to proceed while recognizing the historical importance of the site.

Native American sought greater protection, the board’s decision underlined the complexities of balancing development with historical preservation.

 As construction progresses, ongoing excavations promise to unveil further archaeological treasures, enriching Miami’s history.
