In Miami Beach, construction of the Miami Beach Canopy Bridge, a pedestrian bridge over the MacArthur Causeway, is slated to start by summer 2024 following a delay of two years. This development is part of an agreement tied to a major South Beach project undertaken by real estate firms Terra, Crescent Heights, and New Valley. In exchange for building the 48-story Five Park condominium and retail space at 500 Alton Road, the firms committed to creating a park and this pedestrian bridge.
The bridge, designed by French artist Daniel Buren, known for his distinct candy-striped art installations, aims to be a prominent feature in Miami Beach. David Martin, CEO of Terra, stated that the bridge construction was planned to commence after the substantial completion of the Five Park tower. The bridge is expected to enhance connectivity in South Beach, linking areas from Lincoln Road to South Pointe Park.
Despite the developers topping off the Five Park and completing the Canopy Park, the bridge’s construction has faced delays. Originally scheduled to start in 2022, the project has been postponed due to various factors, including the completion of related developments and necessary permit acquisitions.
The city has contributed $9.6 million to the bridge project. The City officials have not set a specific timetable for the project’s completion but have an agreement with the developers to finish it by 2027.
The bridge’s construction will necessitate traffic adjustments, including single-lane closures on the MacArthur Causeway and temporary shutdowns for the installation of colored glass panels.
The Miami Beach Canopy Bridge is seen as an essential infrastructure project for the community, promising safer and more accessible pedestrian and bicycle routes.
