The most expensive residential real estate sale ever recorded in New York City occurred in 2019, when a 24,000 square foot (2,230 square meter) apartment at 220 Central Park South was sold for around $240 million. The four-story duplex apartment features 16 bedrooms, 17 bathrooms, a private cinema, a library, a ballroom, and direct access to Central Park.

Prior to this, the most expensive real estate transaction in New York City history was the sale of the penthouse at One57 in 2014, which sold for approximately $100.5 million. Since then, several other luxury properties have been sold at high prices in New York City, including another apartment at 220 Central Park South that sold for around $100 million in 2019.

As of April 2023, the most expensive listing is located at 217 West 57th Street, on the famous Billionaire’s Row. The seller is asking for $250,000,000 for this 7-bedroom penthouse with 17,545 sqft. It has been for sale since September 2022
